Family Snippet - February 2007

FAMILY SNIPPET

This month’s family snippet comes in the form of a dual promotion.

First of all, imagine what you could do with £63.00. You could times it by 6 and get £378.00. This could buy you one return ticket to France with a 2-day pass to Disneyland Resort Paris. (But it would be very lonely to go by yourself.)

£63.00 could also pay for a deposit towards a 1 week holiday on the island of Tenerife or Lanzarote. (But then you would still have to come up with the other £1000.00 if you take your whole family)

£63.00 could pay for a 1-day car rental from a leading rental company so you can take a drive to enjoy England’s Riviera on the south–west coast where temperatures are said to soar at 30 degrees Celsius in July on the warm summer beaches. (But then you have to pay for the hotel, the petrol – and still you’ll be alone)

Kids-In-Discipleship

What is Kids in Discipleship?

In these last days God promises to "turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Malachi 4:6). The Holy Spirit is binding the hearts of families together today as parents and other caregivers are beging equipped, supported and empowered as spiritual mentors to their children.

Kids in Discipleship - a ministry offered in local churches, is specially designed for families and focused on children. The K.I.D. mission is Mentoring kids to be empowered disciples of Jesus NOW! This mission is accomplished through a three-step process:

Family Snippet - Hot Water

FAMILY SNIPPET – HOT WATER

The story I am quoting is third hand. I borrowed it from one of our pastors. He borrowed it from a book he was reading. So the details may not be accurate.

A young woman was making a cup of tea for herself. While concentrating on the tea-making procedure of boiling the kettle, putting in the tea bag and waiting for it to brew, she thought about a spiritual lesson.

Tea, she thought, can be made two ways; by brewing the leaves in a teapot, or by using a tea bag. She settled for the bag method as the better one because it reminded her about how God works with her.

She likened the teabag to herself, and the hot water as the challenges and difficulties she sometimes go through in her life. As she thought about the scenario, she realised that the teabag comes with a string which hangs outside the cup as a life line to the tea bag. She imagined God holding on to the ‘string’ of her life when she lands ‘in hot water’ during her life. She resolved to pray and ask God never to let go of that string – because knowing that he is there holding on to it makes all the difference when she lands ‘in hot water’

‘Hot Water’ in families comes in different forms. Some families experience death, strain between husband and wife, legal battles, critical and mental illness, family changes, new additions to the family, parental responsibilities, challenges with children, etc. I am encouraged by this story that whatever we go through, God is there holding on to that string – being with us every step of the way. I am not sure why we are not pulled out of that hot water at once, in fact I don’t know. I am very careful about making theories to why these things happen and why God does not seem to act. What I am sure of, is that He is with us every step of the way. That to me is better than not caring at all.

Therefore whatever ‘hot water’ you are struggling with in your family. Hold on. That string is still in God’s hands, and he will not let you drown. Of that I am sure.
